Rosalía has surprised fans with the release of her new studio album LUX, an ambitious 18-track set performed in 13 languages and backed by the London Symphony Orchestra.
She gave fans the first taste in late October with the single “Berghain” featuring Björk and Yves Tumor, surprising with her lyrical performance in an operatic soprano voice and ease to toggle from the English to German to Spanish languages. The orchestral masterpiece—which peaked at No. 16 on Hot Rock Alternative Songs; No. 13 on Hot Alternative Songs; No. 22 on Billboard Global 200; and No. 14 on Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts (all dated Nov. 15)—is about a woman tormented by a toxic relationship.
“This album has a completely different sound than any of the projects that I’ve done before,” the Spanish singer-songwriter said in her recent Billboard cover story. “It was a challenge for me to do a more orchestral project and learn how to use an orchestra, understand all the instruments, all the possibilities, and learn and study from amazing composers in history and say, ‘OK, that’s what’s been done. What can I do that feels personal and honest for me?’ And also the challenge of having that inspiration in classical music and trying to do something that I haven’t done before, trying to write songs from another place. Because the instrumentation is different from all the other projects I have done. But also the writing, the structures, it’s very different.”
While LUX is critically acclaimed, many of Rosalía’s loyal and new fans are adapting to her avant-garde project. Below, check out some of the best meme reactions on the internet.
