Avicii‘s “Wake Me Up” has aggregated more than three billion streams on Spotify, according to a representative for the streamer shared Monday (Feb. 9). The achievement makes the 2013 EDM/country classic one of just 51 songs to surpass the three billion streams mark.
This three billion statistic is the latest of many notable accomplishments for the song, which in February of 2014 became the first song in Spotify’s history to reach 200 million streams. When the song reached the two billion streams mark in 2023, it made Avicii the first Swedish artist in Spotify history to hit this number.
“Wake Me Up” is cemented in history as a juggernaut of the EDM era, helping define the dance crossover smash format when it reached No. 4 on the Hot 100 in October of 2013 and ultimately spent 54 weeks on the chart. Featuring vocals from Aloe Blacc, the song spent 26 weeks at No. 1 on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, ultimately spending 55 weeks on the chart.
The song was of course initially poorly received by dance music fans, with the story of it getting booed when the late producer debuted it at Ultra Music Festival 2013 now part of EDM mythology. The show, which featured appearances by Black and country singer Audra Mae, happened ahead of the September release of Avicii’s country-focused album True, which also included “Hey Brother” featuring instrumentation from bluegrass legend Dan Tyminski.
Other songs with more than three billion Spotify streams include The Weeknd‘s “Blinding Lights,” Ed Sheeran‘s “The Shape of You,” The Neighbourhood‘s “Sweater Weather, The Weeknd and Daft Punk‘s “Starboy” and Harry Styles‘ “As It Was.”
