Madison Beer talks about working with The Summer I Turned Pretty star Sean Kaufman for her “Bittersweet” music video, explains why she wanted to name her album Locket, why performing at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show was a dream come true, the writing inspirations behind songs like “Complexity,” “Angel Wings” and “Bad Enough.”

Actually a fan of mine picked the name for it. So that song is really special to me. Music kind of just courses through my veins, and it literally feels bittersweet to me when I listen to it, baby. I named the album Locket. I actually picked the name before the album was done, which was really nice, and I didn’t have to stress out about that afterwards, which is usually what I do. So I wanted it to be something that was tangible. I knew that. I knew it was something that I wanted to actually be able to hold physically. Don’t know why, but I really wanted to do that. And then I was thinking of things that could be close to your heart, things that have meaning. I love vintage stuff, so I wanted to do something that had a little bit of a vintage sort of esthetic. When you think about it and locket just came to mind. And it was amongst a list of probably 30 other items that could have potentially worked, but it was the one that really felt perfect since the jump. “Bittersweet” was like the last thing that we finished on the album, really. It was a very late edition, and it was a song that I was just needing desperately to write something. I was going through everything you hear on the song, and I was like, my album’s already done. I can’t write about this. But then, luckily, I had people that were like, no, come in the studio. You can do it with us. And we made it. And immediately I was like, “This feels so moving and it feels so real.” And I wanted to also figure out a way to write a song about something, you know, so emotional like that, but then also have it feel hopeful in a way, and I think “Bittersweet” does that in a really awesome way. And it literally feels bittersweet to me when I listen to it. And that was my goal with it was like, How can I write something that feels sad, but still, for some reason you want to, like, spin around in your room.
