Dave Franco’s horror movie The Rental – starring his wife, Alison Brie – took the No. 1 spot at the box office this weekend, bringing in $420,871 over the weekend from 251 theaters, averaging $1,677 per theater, according to Deadline on Sunday, July 26.  A majority of that is from drive-in theaters, which continue to be the leading exhibitors at the weekend box office.

According to the movie synopsis:  Two couples on an oceanside getaway grow suspicious that the host of their seemingly perfect rental house may be spying on them. Before long, what should have been a celebratory weekend trip turns into something far more sinister, as well-kept secrets are exposed and the four old friends come to see each other in a whole new light.

Franco said in a statement: “I have been truly fortunate to have a partner in IFC Films whose agility and creativity during this time has allowed us to have this incredible moment for our film. As a first time filmmaker, I’m beyond grateful to the audiences who supported us this weekend.”
