(Aug. 3, 2012) -- A seven-run fifth inning did most of the talking for the Fresno offense as the Grizzlies beat the visiting Nashville Sounds, 10-5, on Friday at Chukchansi Park.
The Grizzlies sent 11 batters to the plate in that inning. Eli Whiteside led off with a single and collected two hits in the inning. Justin Christian drove in the inning's first run with an RBI single to tie the game at 4-4. Ryan Lollis followed Christian with a two-run triple to give the Grizzlies the lead for good. Todd Linden's single, Brock Bond's bases-loaded walk and Whiteside's two-run single capped the inning's scoring.
Fresno had fallen behind in the top of the first when Nashville scored three runs off starter Andrew Kown. Humberto Quintero drove in two of those runs with a ground-rule double.
The Grizzlies bounced back with two runs in the bottom of the first, all scored despite no hits in the inning. With Lollis and Conor Gillaspie on second and first via walks, Linden reached base on a force attempt, but Nashville first baseman Sean Halton made an errant throw to second base that allowed Lollis to score. Noonan drove in Gillaspie for the second run of the inning with a ground out to first base.
In the second, Bond led off with a triple. Whiteside drove in Bond for the first of his three RBI in the game with a sacrifice fly that tied the game at 3-3. Taylor Green gave the Sounds a 4-3 lead with a solo home run in the third.
Kown picked up the win after holding Nashville to one more run after the big first inning. Fresno reliever Wilmin Rodriguez held the Sounds to one run over three innings. Hiram Burgos suffered his first loss with Nashville after surrendering nine runs (seven earned) on seven hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings.
Five Fresno hitters had two hits in the game, while every position player reached base safely. The four-game series is wrapping up today with Fresno right-hander Yusmeiro Petit is facing Nashville's Claudio Vargas.
