Visitor's Bureau Threatened

(  VISITOR'S BUREAU ON CHOPPING BLOCK)
THE LATEST VICTIM OF THE BUDGET CHOPPING BLOCK COULD BE THE FRESNO CONVENTION AND VISITOR'S BUREAU - - AND IT COULD BE OUT OF BUSINESS BY THE END OF THE YEAR.
GEORGE HOSTETTER REPORTS IN THIS MORNING'S FRESNO BEE THAT MAYOR ASHLEY SWEARENGIN PROPOSES TO END CITY SUPPORT FOR THE BUREAU WHICH IS RESPONSIBLE FOR DRUMMING UP BUSINESS LIKE CONVENTIONS AND TOURISM.  AT THE MOMENT, THE CITY PAYS 1.2-MILLION OF THE BUREAU'S 1.3-MILLION DOLLAR BUDGET.  SWEARENGIN WANTS TO SLASH THAT SUPPORT BY MORE THAN HALF.  THE C-V-B WOULD HAVE TO RAISE MONEY FROM PRIVATE SOURCES TO SURVIVE.  IF THEY CAN'T, THE CITY WOULD PROVIDE ABOUT 150-THOUSAND DOLLARS TO SHUT DOWN THE CONVENTION AND VISITORS BUREAU.
